The new issue of Britain's Paranormal Magazine (Nov. 2009) includes a very interesting article from UFO researcher and writer Nigel Watson titled UFO Outlaws. As is the case with my On the Trail of the Saucer Spies book, Nigel's article focuses on the way in which certain elements of the official world have secretly spied on players within the UFO community.

Nigel relates the details of his own experience with Britain's Police Force - and specifically Special Branch and CID; as well as the well-known case of 1990s UFO-hacker, Matthew Bevan; Octopus researcher Danny Casolaro; and several others.

Saucers, Secrets & Surveillance

Back in 1991, legendary collector of crashed UFO stories, Leonard Stringfield, published in one of his many “Status Reports” the account of one “S.M. Brannigan,” a former U.S. military source who claimed knowledge of an alleged UFO crash somewhere in the vicinity of the Cannock Chase woods (see photo) and the town of Penkridge, Staffordshire, England.

For years, the case (like so many others!) languished in obscurity. But, in 1996, Irene Bott, then the President of the now-defunct Staffordshire UFO Group, was contacted by a local, elderly man who claimed deep knowledge of the event.

So, on a cold, windy and wet morning in December of that year, me and Irene headed out to his home and were told a strange and intriguing story of a crashed UFO, a high-level military and police cover-up, and of what may have been deep surveillance of the witness himself - and maybe even of me and Irene, too.

It was a truly strange and surreal interview, and one which I have never forgot.

And, although for me the interview was a one-off (the overall investigation was very much that of the Staffordshire UFO Group), I’m very pleased to be able to state that a guy local to the area has started his own, deep investigation of the case.

Here’s the link to the blog, which is regularly updated as and when Stephen - the investigator - has new data to report on.

It’s one of those odd cases that is as potentially significant as it is extremely weird and frustratingly elusive and unresolved.

Boston, Mass. – August 11, 2008 – The Mass UFO Show is pleased to announce an exciting program for its third annual rendition of New England’s only UFO conference, to be held at 7:00 PM on Friday, October 17th, 2008 at the Hibernian Hall in Watertown, Massachusetts.

Building upon last year’s event (that featured a riveting theme of maritime UFOs or “USOs”), this year’s theme focuses on the alleged UFOs and the Struggle for Government Openness, Men In Black, The Roswell UFO Incident, alien abduction and a radio broadcast that spooked The United States in 1938.

The keynote speaker is Budd Hopkins, whose lecture will be entitled “The UFO Abduction Scenario: What We Know Today”.

Budd Hopkins is a world-renowned artist, author, and pioneer UFO abduction researcher. Having investigated well over 700 cases, he now heads the Intruders Foundation, a nonprofit, scientific research and support organization. Budd first became interested in the UFO phenomenon when he and two others had a daylight UFO sighting near Truro, Massachusetts, in 1964. In 1975 he carried out his first major investigation which involved a UFO landing and occupant incident in North Hudson Park, NJ. Shortly thereafter, he began to concentrate on the investigation of the UFO abduction phenomenon, which led to the eventual publication of his findings. Taken together, his four books, Missing Time (1981), Intruders (1987), and Witnessed (1996) are widely regarded by researchers and skeptics alike as comprising the most influential series of books yet published on the abduction phenomenon. Intruders was later adapted to television. Hopkins’ latest book is Sight Unseen: Science, UFO Invisibility, and Transgenic Beings. These works, along with Hopkins’ lectures, and his other presentations have been responsible for bringing a number of other noted researchers - namely David Jacobs, John Carpenter, Yvonne Smith, and John Mack - into this extraordinary area of specialization. His documented discoveries have become the basis of most later abduction investigations and research.

Budd Hopkins has long been considered ufology’s most visible figure. He pioneered and continues to lead the investigation into the most controversial aspect of the UFO phenomenon-the systematic abduction of human beings by UFO occupants. As the world’s premier expert on this issue, he has worked with more than one thousand people who have reported abduction experiences over the past twenty years. These individuals come from all walks of life and include physicians, psychiatrists, attorneys, police officers, military personnel, political figures, personalities from the entertainment world, and even a NASA scientist.

A prolific writer and internationally respected painter, Hopkins has delivered hundreds of UFO lectures around this country and around the world. His groundbreaking first book, Missing Time, was the first work to compare a number of UFO abduction cases in order to isolate the patterns they revealed. His second book, Intruders-The Incredible Visitation at Copley Woods, was a New York Times bestseller and the basis for the popular 1992 CBS miniseries, Intruders, which has since been broadcast internationally. His most widely acclaimed book is Witnessed-The True Story of the Brooklyn Bridge UFO Abductions that deals with a high-ranking United Nations official being abducted by aliens.

Hopkins’ goal has always been to bring an objective, dispassionate scientific intelligence to bear on the UFO abduction phenomenon. To this end, he founded the Intruders Foundation (IF) in 1989. IF is a nonprofit organization devoted to research and public education concerning this extraordinary enigma. They publish a respected journal, as well as offer a nationwide referral service for those wishing to explore their own suspected abduction experiences.
Despite its extremely controversial nature, Hopkins’ research has received serious commentary in such mainstream publications as Time, Paris Match, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The New York Review of Books, Omni, People, and Cosmopolitan. He has been a guest on hundreds of television and radio programs including Nightline, Good Morning America, The Today Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Tonight Show, Charlie Rose, Larry King Live, The Charles Grodin Show, Sally Jesse Raphael, The Geraldo Rivera Show, 20/20, 48 Hours, Unsolved Mysteries, Encounters, A Current Affair, Nightwatch, The Late Show, The Art Bell Show, Tom Snyder, The Laura Lee Show, Hieronimus & Company, Weekend Edition (National Public Radio), Voice of America, Armed Forces Radio, numerous BBC affiliates, and many other shows and forums.

Leslie Kean is an investigative reporter who has been published widely in national and international mainstream media, such as the Boston Globe, the Baltimore Sun, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, The Newark Star Ledger, The Nation magazine, the Montreal Gazette, the International Herald Tribune, the Globe and Mail, the Sydney Morning Herald, the Bangkok Post, and the Irish Independent, among many others. Since 2000, beginning with her story on the COMETA Report which was published in the Boston Globe, her ongoing reporting has focused on providing serious, well-documented coverage of the UFO issue. In 2007, she broke the story of Governor Fife Symington’s UFO sighting in Arizona and wrote about the O’Hare Airport UFO encounter for the Sacramento Bee, the Providence Journal and Scripps Howard wire service.

Kean is a co-founder of the Washington-based, advocacy group the Coalition For Freedom of Information (CFI, www.freedomofinfo.org), and is the plaintiff in a landmark Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed against NASA in 2002 attempting to acquire documents on the Kecksburg UFO crash case. Settled last fall, NASA has been required to provide hundreds of previously withheld documents to Kean. John Podesta, former Chief of Staff for President Clinton, who has supported this effort since 2002, described her victory as “a triumph for open government and the spirit of inquiry.”

With filmmaker James Fox, Kean co-organized and produced a landmark international press conference in Washington, DC in November, 2007. Moderated by former Arizona Governor Fife Symington, the event featured high level military, aviation and government officials from seven countries and was covered widely by media around the world. At the press conference, Kean and CFi launched a new international initiative - backed by Generals and other high level officials from many countries - urging the US Government to open a new, official investigation into UFOs, as other countries have already done. Kean has worked as a producer with Fox on his new film, and is working with another independent film company on a second UFO documentary.

Another prolific author, UFO expert and government agitator is Nick Redfern. Nick was born in Great Britain and now resides in the United States. He has appeared on more than 60 TV shows to promote his numerous books (including the Sci-Fi Channel). He has written several books about paranormal and UFO mysteries and the attempt to discredit them. He has appeared on MSNBC with Keith Olbermann. He has lectured at a variety of conferences, including the Laughlin UFO Congress (in 1998 and 2001); the Mutual UFO Network Conference in 2004; the Aztec UFO Conference in 2003; the Texas Bigfoot Research Conference in 2004; at numerous events for the British-based UFO Magazine between 1997 and 2000 (now closed); and at the UFO Crash Retrieval Conference in Las Vegas (in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006).

His many book titles include On The Trail Of Saucer Spies: UFOs and Government Surveillance, Strange Secrets: Real Government Files on the Unknown, Body Snatchers in the Desert: The Horrible Truth at the Heart of the Roswell Story and Cosmic Crashes.

Nick’s lecture at the Mass UFO Show will be entitled “Men In Black”. Redfern will reveal his first-hand encounters with the “Saucer Spies” and also look at how Men-In-Black have fit into popular western culture via two major motion pictures in 1997 and 2002. There will also be a brief discussion about an imposter who posed as a UFO investigator and was encountered by the Massachusetts Mutual UFO Network several years ago.

Back again as a co-host of the Mass UFO Show will be Matt Moniz. Matt has over 20 years experience investigating UFO phenomena and has had many other paranormal adventures. He has a “Forrest Gump”-type litany of involvement with historical UFO case investigations. As a chemist, he analyzed soil samples from the famed “Bentwaters Incident” and was acknowledged accordingly in the book “Left at East Gate” by Larry Warren and Peter Robbins. He will be bringing soil samples from that area where an alleged UFO landing took place 27 years ago. Matt was also featured in the popular books “Witnessed” by Budd Hopkins, and “Glimpses of Other Realities” by Linda Moulton Howe. Matt will be reporting live from the Mass UFO Show for the hit fortean radio show Spooky Southcoast that is hosted by Tim Weisberg and Matt Costa.

Matt will engage Nick Redfern in a brief but lively debate about what really happened at Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. Nick has a radically different view of the event that is in opposition to the traditional UFO legend.

Finally, in addition to the typical ambient ufo-related music and motion picture themes that waft in the background of the Mass UFO Show, a recording of Orson Welles’ controversial radio program The War of the Worlds will be played at 6:00 PM (when doors open to the hall). This is a 70th anniversary tribute to the radio broadcast that was transmitted by Mercury Theatre on the Air on October 30th, 1938. Based upon the popular novel of 1898 by H.G. Wells, this drama frightened the entire Northeastern Coast of the United States. Later, two major motion pictures were also adapted from this event, in 1953 and again in 2005.

Special guests will include esteemed cryptozoologist and popular author Loren Coleman. Coleman, the world’s greatest living cryptozoologist, who will be speaking about Mothman the following night at the Mass Monster Mash, will be available to sign copies of his books, including his culture-changing masterpiece Mysterious America, considered by many to be the seminal book of cryptozoology. It was Coleman who dubbed the anomalous area in Southeastern Massachusetts as the Bridgewater Triangle. He also created Cryptomundo, the premiere cryptozoology web site on the World Wide Web.

Also appearing as a special guest will be Tim Binnall. Tim is the producer of the Binnall of America Audio Series and webmaster of the very popular internet portal Binnall of America that deals with “esoteric” phenomena. Tim is a webmaster for Coast to Coast with George Noory and he will be back to meet-and-greet the speakers and attendees while again serving as the Mass UFO Show Ambassador. He was a vital participant in last year’s conference (and recognized as such with an award) and his company was enjoyed by many.

Finally, if you have had what you believe to be a UFO encounter, you’ll be able to report it to Massachusetts Mutual UFO Network personnel. They will be on hand to answer any questions or provide information about their organization.

This event was created and produced by philanthropist and paranormal gadfly John Horrigan. Horrigan has a vast history of paranormal exploration and is considered by many to be an innovative popular historian, accomplished sports show announcer and lecturer.

The venue is the historic Watertown Hibernian Hall, located at 151 Watertown Street in Watertown, Mass. Seating is limited, but there is ample free parking. It is accessible by public transportation.

The latest issue (number 2) of Stuart Miller's new magazine, Alien Worlds, goes on sale next week and includes an article from me that provides an update on my research into how and why government, military and intelligence agencies spy on the UFO research community - which was the subject of my 2006 book, On the Trail of the Saucer Spies.

In the article you'll learn a great deal about UFO-espionage on the part of British, Russian, American and Australian authorities - and, in some cases, for distinctly unusual reasons.

Indeed, as I am careful to point out in the article: "Time and time again, I found that the reasons why British, American and Australian Intelligence agencies (to name but three nations involved) were secretly spying on the UFO community actually had nothing whatsoever to do with UFOs, aliens, dead extraterrestrials held in cryogenic storage, or tales of Area 51 and Hangar 18.

"Rather the motivation was prompted by the fact that those same intelligence communities were acutely worried some UFO researchers were also tied with political extremists, the criminal underworld, and hostile, overseas intelligence agencies - such as those of the former Soviet Union and North Korea.

"They also feared that our UFO research was acting as a form of ingenious camouflage to mask the fact that we were, in reality, trying to uncover defence and intelligence secrets of a distinctly down-to-earth nature for those same aforementioned hostile overseas intelligence agencies."

Yes, as a ufologist, you are being watched; but for reasons that have very little to do with little green (or grey) men with big black eyes.

The Men in Black in "Beyond"

The new issue (No. 14) of Britain's Beyond Magazine includes a lengthy article from me on one of the most intriguing aspects of of Saucer-Spying: that of the Men in Black. As I note in the article, for the most part at least, the puzzle can be traced back to an unusual encounter with three mystery MIBs that UFO researcher Albert Bender had in the early 1950s.

The story is told in Gray Barker's book, They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers, and is most definitely a weird and wild one - as is Bender's own book on the subject: Flying Saucers and the Three Men.

And while Bender's story has definite occult-type overtones to it, there is no doubt that the MIB motif has been ingeniously utilized by elements of the Intelligence communities of several nations (including both the US and the UK) as part of its efforts to keep tabs on certain elements of the UFO research community and UFO witnesses.

Perhaps the most astonishing thing I found during the course of my research into this matter was a batch of FBI documents showing that none other than FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover ordered one of his agents to secure for him a copy of Gray Barker's book on the MIB puzzle.

The UFO phenomena once experienced by thousands at Giant Rock, in Landers, CA in the middle of the last century returns for its third year RETRO UFO (3)

Event Held At The Integratron in Landers, California

Whether you believe in UFO’s or not, RETRO UFO (3) will take you beyond the typical UFO lecture hall of a hotel conference room and into a new, and nostalgic way of viewing the UFO phenomenon that has intrigued thousands for a millennia. The event is presented in tents and canopies on the grounds of the World Famous Integratron.

Speakers will lecture, share their stories and experiences about Giant Rock, The Integratron, Crop Circles and the latest UFO’s information. Many of these stories will show how a small group of men and women impacted a region of the Mojave Desert and made history, often compared in scale to the stories of Roswell, New Mexico.

The original events of The Giant Rock Spacecraft Conventions ended well over 30 years ago. Returning for its third year, Retro UFO (3) has more speakers and programs designed to excite memories and feelings of this nostalgic era of the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. At the event this year we’ll explore the UFO movement and the pioneers that paved the way for current UFO believers. One of the earliest pioneers of that movement was George Van Tassel.

George, his wife Eva, and their three daughters lived under Giant Rock, once considered a sacred space to early American Indians. Once known as the largest free standing boulder in the world until its split in February of 2000, Giant Rock and surrounding areas are presently owned and cared for by the Bureau of Land Management.

It was George and his family during the period of the 1950’s to the 1970’s who hosted Spacecraft Conventions at Giant Rock Airport in the Mojave Desert. Eva, his wife became famous for serving hamburgers and apple pie from her restaurant, The Come On Inn. Records show that Howard Hughes would fly into Giant Rock Airport just to enjoy a piece of Eva’s apple pie.

Crowds of thousands gathered from the late 1960’s to the mid 70’s to hear Contactees tell their stories and to share their UFO experiences. George himself, a Contacee would channel messages and talk about boarding a spaceship and meeting “space people” who shared information with him on how to build the Integratron an Electro-static generator that was to be used for the cellular rejuvenation of humans.

Many of the original Contactees who participated in the Spacecraft Convention of the 60’s and 70’s have passed on, however a small group still remain and will be at Retro UFO (3) to share their stories.On Saturday, April 26, and Sunday April 27 modern day enthusiasts such as Dr. Louis Turi, Kenn Thomas, Nick Redfern, Paul Kimball, Ralph Ring, Barbara Lamb, Greg Bishop, Alexandra “Chica” Bruce, Adam GoRightly and a host of others will share their present day experiences and research.

The Pioneer Town Posse, also a local favorite will present a short drama on, “What does a Cowboy do when he sees a UFO... shoot it?”Other demonstrations on how the Integratron was intended to work by Bob Benson, exhibits by local artists, music, vendors, Sound Baths, prizes for the Best Costume and Who Builds the Best Aluminum Foil Hat will round out some of the festivities for the weekend.

Also planned is an evening program featuring Zamora, The Torture King (His Las Vegas name by the way), And the Movie Farewell Good Brothers along with a laser light show all projected on the Dome. (Weather permitting).

Robin Cole, UFOs, GCHQ and Special Branch

In the mid-to-late 1990s, Robin Cole, a British-based UFO researcher, dug deep into the connections between the UFO issue and Britain's Government Communications Headquarters at Cheltenham. His reward for doing so? An extensive, secret investigation of his activities initiated by the official world, and that implicated GCHQ, the British Police Force's Special Branch, the Royal Air Force, Ministry of Defense, and possibly others too.

Missing Files and the FBI

The FBI has quietly removed from its website a PDF collection of documentation on alleged cases of spontaneous human combustion. Instead, all you get now is a summary of the files in question.
Interestingly, the FBI has also begun to remove other Fortean files, and UFO-related data, from its site too.
For example, up until very recently - but no longer, sadly - you could also download in PDF format the FBI's 135-page surveillance file on Silas Newton, who was a key player in the legend of the alleged UFO crash at Aztec, New Mexico in March 1948.
Also: the FBI's 42-page file on Philip Corso, co-author with William Birnes of The Day After Roswell, has been completely deleted from the FBI's site. All you get now is a name check listed in the "C" section of the Bureau's online research page.
The 179-page FBI surveillance file on maverick scientist and Aleister Crowley disciple Jack Parsons is no longer available; the 287-page file on scientific genius Nikola Tesla is completely gone; as is the 789-page collection on Wilhelm "cloud-buster" Reich.
Some of the FBI's files on weird phenomena - such as its UFO papers, its animal mutilation files, its MJ12 reports, and its Project Blue Book records - are still available.
But this recent deletion of what amounts to thousands of pages of "strange secrets" that the FBI had previously posted online in a handy, downloadable format is very curious indeed.
Of course, you can still get the files by filing a written request with the FBI; but that can take time, and for some of the larger files, it can cost significant amounts of money too.
Luckily, I downloaded all the now-missing files onto a CD some time ago...

The Metropolitan Police Special Irish Branch was formed in March 1883 to counter Irish 'Fenian' terrorism on mainland Britain.
Over the years, Special Branch took on responsibility for combating a wide range of extremist and terrorist activity and the term 'Irish' was dropped from its title.
Special Branch had responsibility for gathering, collating and exploiting intelligence on extremist political and terrorist activity, disseminating intelligence for operational use and assisting other Government agencies to counter threats to the security of the United Kingdom.
Today, it has been restructured into the Counter-Terrorism Command.
Over the years, Special Branch took a keen interest in the actions and activities of certain British-based UFO researcher, such as Robin Cole (a Cheltenham-based researcher who dug deep into the UFO-related activities of the Government Communications Headquarters, GCHQ); Matthew Williams, best-known for his investigations of RAF Rudloe Manor, Wiltshire; Jonathan Downes; George King and a number of others.

As many people may be aware, the FBI has an extensive surveillance file on dead blond babe, Marilyn Monroe. However, it wasn't just the FBI that was secretly spying on the Hollywood glamor girl.
My Celebrity Secrets book includes a discussion of a strange, unofficial document on the actress leaked out of a secret government archive in the mid-1990s - or so the allegations go, at least.
Incredibly, the document claims that none other than Marilyn's one-time lover, JFK (also known as the President of the United States - until Lee Harvey Oswald, or the CIA, or the Mafia, or the KGB, or the FBI, or someone blew his head off), had secretly informed the actress of the trut.h surrounding the notorious "Roswell UFO Crash" that occurred in the deserts of New Mexico in the summer of 1947.
It's a weird story, for sure, and allegations that the document is a fraud abound. If true, however, it's further evidence of how and why the official world keeps a close watch on those that immerse themselves in the UFO puzzle.

Matthew Bevan, a computer genius who hacked into multiple US Government and military systems in search of classified data on UFOs in the 1990s became the subject of a major surveillance investigation (undertaken by the US Air Force, the FBI, National Security Agency, MI5, MI6 and even Chinese Military Intelligence) prior to his arrest by Scotland Yard's Computer Crimes Unit in 1996.
Ultimately, all charges against Bevan were thrown out of court.

"It would seem fair to say that at least for the last year, Nick Redfern has been the hottest topic around when it comes to UFO related books. Back in June 2005 we had Body Snatchers, the story about what really happened at Roswell, and now we have Saucer Spies, the history of American and British Intelligence agency observation of Ufologists.
"Now when you read that last sentence it makes a kind of natural sense. After all, you would think, of course the Intelligence agencies are going to watch Ufologists and they are going to smack them sharply on the nose like a naughty puppy if any of them get too close to any kind of truth.
"Except that’s not how it was. It seems that the spooks couldn’t care less what researchers found out about UFOs, which isn’t very nice of them. Their interest it appears was more to do with the concern that some Ufologists might be using an interest in the subject as a cover for less patriotic activities. Like for instance spying for a foreign power, and so on.
"And Nick Redfern should know as he himself was watched by the UK’s Special Branch for a number of years. You see, Nick kept company with very bad men. Matthew Williams, Matthew Bevan and Robin Cole were all dastardly villains because they too were Ufologists and rather than sit lamely back and fiddle with their widgets, they got off their backsides and either broke into restricted government buildings to get answers or hacked into the Pentagon’s computer system, or, as in Robin’s case, had the temerity to actually write a pamphlet on what the GCHQ (UK equivalent of the NSA) knew about UFOs.
"But not satisfied with just consorting with these grave threats to the security of the realm, Nick further compounded his attraction to Special branch by standing outside Porton Down, the UK government’s centre for biological warfare research, and noting down the car registration numbers of people driving in and out of the base. Why would a Ufologist want to do that for God’s sake? I’m afraid the answer is in the book.
"Nick covers Adamski, Newton/Scully/Gebauer, Van Tassel, Albert Bender, Men in Black, the real story behind some alien abductions, APEN – a mysterious group of UK individuals from the political far right, the Berwyn Mountain incident, Jenny Randles meeting with “Robert”, animal mutilations, the escapades of Matthew Williams, Matthew Bevan’s hacking into the Pentagon, the Provost and Security Services, direct approaches to Ufologists by AFOSI, and much, much more. In particular, Nick has the assistance of a former Special Branch detective who he calls The Sandman who, years after the events described in Nick’s book, is quite happy to confirm and clear up and explain what was going on and why.
"This is an excellently researched and well written and informative book that casts Ufology in another perspective. It is a perspective that some may feel uncomfortable with but you need to remember that this is a Nick Redfern book and Nick isn’t in to tucking us up all safe and snug at night. What this is is a further clarification of the UFO reality and that reality isn’t exactly what a lot of Ufologists currently believe it to be. "
